BUSTED: CATALAN POLICE ENDS EIYE CONFRATERNITY, SEX-TRAFFICKING IN SPAIN
Catalan Police have busted a sex-trafficking group in Spain known as the Supreme Eiye Confraternity (SEC), or the Air Lords following a raid on their residential building.
BBC’s Sam Piranty was given access by the Catalan police, Mossos D’Esquadra, to an investigation into a Nigerian sex-trafficking gang. He spoke to traffickers and women rescued from sexual slavery before filming an early morning raid in November, which led to 23 arrests. He also discovered that the gang is now using London as a gateway into Europe.
It’s 08:00 in the Catalan Police Headquarters on the outskirts of Barcelona and Xavi Cortes, head of the anti-trafficking unit, waits patiently for his 22 teams to confirm they are in position. Finally, he gives the order.
Two-hundred-and-fifty officers quietly climb out of their police vans. Single file, each team approaches a residential building watched by a few surprised neighbours.
On reaching the door, one of the masked police officers uses his fingers to count down. Three, two, one. The door is knocked down, the silence shattered, the officers rush inside.
The raid results in the arrest of the leaders of a Nigerian-based group running an international sex-trafficking ring in Barcelona.
It’s known as the Supreme Eiye Confraternity (SEC), or the Air Lords, and 23 people are now behind bars, with European Arrest Warrants issued for those who have left the country.
This operation was 18 months in the planning and involved monitoring more than a million phone calls, tapping dozens of mobile phones and months of surveillance.
”You know, one of the tappings showed us that last year, on 7 July, around 400 members of SEC met in Geneva. They had a big meeting, all together.”
Xavi Cortes, Catalan police says Eiye Confraternity uses forged documents and passports from Nigeria to fly into places like Gatwick – these need co-operation of people working in the government
It was an audacious display of arrogance. In a city where many of the world’s global institutions are headquartered, including numerous UN agencies, a global criminal institution held its own parallel international gathering and no-one tried to stop it.
Benin City, Nigeria, is a human-trafficking hub, and a good place to observe how the criminal operation works.
After long negotiations, our team manages to speak to a recruiter, whose job it is to find girls. The recruiter explains that they either approach girls directly or through their families offering fake jobs abroad in a supermarket, or as a cleaner.
However, not everyone is tricked. Many women approach the recruiters themselves, often in full knowledge that they will be working as a prostitute in Europe. Some parents, also aware of this, approach recruiters on behalf of their children.

NFF Officials engage in a brawl....
The meeting called yesterday by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr. Solomon Dalung had all the trappings of reopening the already settled leadership crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). It took a dangerous turn when the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick and Chris Giwa who is laying claim to the same office almost engaged each other in fisticuffs.
Pinnick and his greatest challenger, Giwa were locked in a battle for the soul of the NFF after the election in Warri, Delta State on September 30, 2014 which produced the present board. The Confederation of African Football and FIFA have both recognised the Amaju Pinnick-led board. Giwa lost his case both in Fifa and the Court of Arbitration for Sports, CAS. And this was after he had withdrawn his case from a Jos court when Fifa moved to ban Nigeria.
For more than one year peace reigned in Nigerian football and the meeting the minister called was generally condemned by football stakeholders who said the action was tantamount to waking up a dead horse which could trigger off another bad blood.
Giwa was laying claim to the NFF top seat, saying he was duly elected after the August 26, 2014 controversial election in Abuja in which delegates massively boycotted.
Dalung, a known friend of Giwa back home from Plateau State who just assumed office late last year seemingly reopened the case and initiated an unnecessary peace move that turned out an anti-climax. between the two warring factions. During the meeting, tempers rose, resulting in altercations from both men who called each other unprintable names.
But for the intervention of Dalung who sat in between the two angry men, the situation would have resulted in the two men using their fists as they wanted.
However, after the fracas which lasted for about five minutes, the meeting continued. After long hours of deliberation, the meeting was deadlocked.
The Minister told reporters that the meeting will reconvene next week Wednesday.
He asked both parties to maintain the peace and that he will try to resolve the problem in the interest of football and the country.
According to him, the meeting has given him the opportunity to hear from both parties. On what FIFA would do if the crisis persists, Dalung said he knows that the world body rules over the game adding that they will also be interested to see that the right thing was done.
“I have the will power and the political power to resolve the issue and I am optimistic that this issue will be resolved. We have decided to hear from them because this is a democracy, if we were in a military dictatorship I may have just decreed and asked one party to step down.”

2016 Volkswagen Beetle Dune Drive
Volkswagen wants all of us to remember the good ol’ days. You know, any time prior to September 2015, when the EPA dropped its NOx-hammer on the company’s dirty-breathing diesels . If you can’t bring yourself to forgive and forget so readily, VW is happy to guide you further down memory lane to the 1960s, when the pollution was hazier and the love flowed freely. After the Microbus-inspired
BUDD-e concept —an all-electric mea culpa—VW appears eager to tap the nostalgia ATM again with this new Beetle Dune .
The Beetle Dune, a midrange trim level in special-edition guise, is meant to evoke Baja Bugs. Those modified Type 1 Beetles, created in the image of the Meyers Manx, could be anything from a recreational dune buggy to a bona fide desert racer. While there wasn’t a single blueprint, a Baja Bug was instantly recognizable by the trimmed-back bodywork and swollen tires.

Court denies FG power to seize MTN's funds in Nigerian banks
Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos has denied the Federal Government powers to seize all funds owned by MTN Nigeria Communications Limited in Nigerian banks, pending when the telecommunication company pays up the N1.4 trillion fine leveled against it by the NCC over its failure to deactivate unregistered sim cards.
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), through his counsel, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), had in a motion filed before the court, expressed fears of MTN moving all its funds in Nigeria, since it was in their habit to do so.
According to the court paper, MTN had between October 2007 and May 2009 moved over $7.7bn of the money made in Nigeria to a foreign account. The telecommunications company had also on February 8, 2008, moved over $936m out of Nigerian banks to their foreign accounts.
“Unless this honourable court urgently entertains this application, the plaintiff/respondent would move its funds out of Nigeria, being the jurisdiction of this honourable court, and thereby frustrate the enforcement of the fine in the likely event that this honourable court sanctions the imposition of the fine,” counsel to the AGF said.
However in his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice denied the Federal governments application, stating that it had not provided any evidence showing that MTN was indeed moving its funds out of Nigerian banks. He said hearing on the case filed against the Federal government challenging the N1.4 trillion fine is more important and of public interest and will need to be heard soon so judgement can be delivered. He adjourned the case to January 22nd.

Android N, Google "driverless" cars & more in Google's Annual Developers's Meeting.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has just revealed that the 10th annual Google I/O developer conference will be held between May 18 and 20, 2016, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View.
For those who don't know, the venue is a little special this time, as it's located in the company's hometown, which Pichai describes the location as the "neighborhood where it all started" via Twitter. He also made the announcement on Google+, giving away more specifics there.
I/O'16 coming to neighborhood where it all started 10 yrs ago: Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, May 18-20. More details soon. #io16
— sundarpichai Fol

"We'll have 3 full days together to dive deep into developer content, code labs, and more. If you can't make it in person, you can still join us via I/O Live and through an I/O Extended event in your local community. Stay tuned to #io16 and +GoogleDevelopers in the coming weeks for more details," he says .
What To Expect
Android N
In last year's conference, Google introduced Android M, and it eventually became the highly anticipated Marshmallow. This time around, the company could officially take the wraps off Android N, which is already well under way with hints of Split Screen and Multiwindow support, according to the team behind Pixel C.
Other expected features include pressure sensitivity, a battery management tool and the Dark Theme, which was scrapped right before Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
As for the name of the major Android update, Pichai says that it could be determined through an online poll , suggesting that Android 7.0 could take after an Indian dessert such as "neyyappam" or "nankhatai."
Project Tango
At CES 2016, Google and Lenovo announced the first
Project Tango smartphone , a device that can take the dimensions of a room and generate on-screen 3D objects. It's likely that the Mountain View company will dish out more details at the event.
Google Cars
Google is renowned for driverless cars, which have been proven to be impressively safe even in terrible weather . However, one of the company's self-driving automobiles was involved in an accident back in July 2015 for the first time.
With that said, Google could unveil new safety measures along with a new lineup of vehicles that are compatible with the system. On top of those, the company could announce third-party applications such as Waze to be integrated with Android Auto.
Android Wear
Updates for the smartwatch OS could be featured, including improved performance of gestures and voice controls. A couple of new devices would be nice to see too. Considering that Android Wear became compatible with iOS in 2015, there's a slim chance that Google will announce compatibility with Windows phones as well.
Chrome OS
There has been buzz about Chrome OS merging with Android , and if it's going to be announced at the conference, then it's arguably going to be the biggest news there. However, Google developers say that it's not true.
At any rate, the integration between the two has been shaping up into a tightly knitted system, so if the unification really turns out to be false, then more features and updates for the pair's communication could be disclosed instead.
Nexus 7
The first Nexus 7 was a big hit, and the second-generation model was too. The most recent rumors surrounding the hot tablet suggest that the third-generation will be
manufactured by Huawei , which is reportedly slated for a
May 2016 release with design cues from the Google Pixel C. If all goes well, Google could finally give an official word about the much-coveted slab.
Project Ara
Project Ara has been going on and off since 2013, and until now, there's still no solid release date. With such a long wait, a "humorous" piece of news about the modular phone breaking into pieces when dropped made rounds on the Internet. Of course, it has been put to a stop eventually. Moving forward, the team behind Project Ara assured fans that the device will roll out in 2016 somewhere in the United States.
Where are we headed next? We are looking at a few locations in the U.S. #ProjectAra #newlocationcomingsoon — Project Ara (@ProjectAra) August 17, 2015Hopefully, Google will give out more specifics at the event.
Google Glass
Remember the awesome demo of Google Glass before? Well, Google could showcase a second-generation model of the wearable tech in the shape of a monocle .
Just like all the other Google I/O developer conferences, this one is also expected to be a huge event. With fingers crossed, Google could finally get its projects off the ground this 2016.

Obama hopes to pave way for Clinton, with farewell State of the Union
Though the White House says Obama will not endorse a candidate in the 2016 primary race, there is no doubt that he has long seen Clinton as the best hope for preserving his legacy.
In fact, that belief was one reason many people in the administration's inner circle were wary of a run by Vice President Joe Biden.
"I think Barack Obama believes that it is incredibly important that Hillary Cinton succeeds him," said a former close aide to Obama who is still connected with the White House. "The only way that we have an economy where people aren't losing their health care is if Hillary Clinton becomes president."
Jeff Shesol, who is familiar with the dynamic between a president and his preferred successor after working in the final years of the Clinton White House as a speechwriter, including on the State of the Union address, highlighted Obama's reliance on Clinton for his place in history.
"The single most important thing that could happen from here on out for the Obama legacy is the election of Hillary Clinton," he said.

$2.1b Arms Fund: PDP leadership challenges Jonathan to speak up.
The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Abdulahi Jalo, has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to speak out on the current $2.1 billion arms deal scandal. At a press conference in Abuja yesterday January 11th, Jalo said President Jonathan is still alive and should speak up on whether he authorized the former NSA Sambo Dasuki to disburse the money that was meant for the purchase of arms.
“As all of you know, no single kobo can be spent by the Federal Government without an act of the National Assembly. Money earmarked for arms purchase, some people diverted it to something else.
So many people that you cannot even expect were involved. Now, darkness has come to light. Jonathan is alive, he should clarify whether he asked the National Security Adviser to divert money meant to fight Boko Haram into his campaign. I’m from the North-East and I know the terrible security situation our people are facing there.
The money was meant to fight Boko Haram, and we all know that you can’t rule without peace. Now darkness has given way for the light. It was not only members of the PDP that shared the money; members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Accord Party and the Social Democratic Party, among others, also shared.
At least, Chief Olu Falae is not a member of the PDP. All of them should return the money. Then, (former) President Jonathan must speak on it. He is still alive. Has he ever said anything like this to Dasuki, ‘go and take from the money meant for the war against Boko Haram and share for my campaign’? It is time for him to speak up.”he said

CBN lifts ban on Dollar cash deposit
The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, who announced the decision in Abuja on Monday, said the new directive took immediate effect.
Mr. Emefiele said the CBN would henceforth equally discontinue its sales of foreign exchange to Bureau de Change (BDC) operators, accusing them of excessive greed and rent-seeking practices.
The CBN governor explained that the BDC operators would now need to source their foreign exchange from autonomous sources.
He said to ensure that no operator violated the country’s anti-money laundering laws, the CBN would deploy more resources to closely monitor the sources of foreign exchange by the BDCs.
“These measures are not intended to be punitive on anyone or any group,” the CBN governor explained.
“Rather it is meant to ensure that the CBN is better able to carry out its mandate in an effective and efficient manner, to guarantee the preservation of our scarce commonwealth, and that our hard-earned financial system stability remain intact to the benefit of all Nigerians,” he added.

War Against Corruption: Buhari issues fresh orders to EFCC...
There appears to be no backing down by President Muhammadu Buhari on his resolve to make anti-corruption and accountability the fulcrum of his administration as he issued fresh orders to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to account for funds that were stolen but recovered by the Commission.
In fact, the President also instructed the EFCC not to be distracted by negative comments from some quarters on its operations, especially as they affect some of those who have been named in the now infamous $2.1b arms scandal.
This is coming at a time when the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP – which has had a few of its leaders arrested and detained in Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade – and the All Progressives Congress, APC, which is the ruling party, are trading words on the propriety or otherwise of the approach of the EFCC executing the anti-graft war.
Meanwhile, Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has declared that the war against corruption in Nigeria would be a very hard one to wage.
Buhari’s fresh orders to EFCC
Sunday Vanguard was reliably informed by Aso Rock Presidential Villa sources that the recent visits of the Chairman, EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu, to the seat of power, where he was said to have had audience with Buhari, may be a pointer to the seeming micro-management of the anti-corruption drive.
Although the source did not make full disclosures about what transpired at the private meeting between the President and Magu, Sunday Vanguard was made to understand that far from the allegation of tele- guiding the EFCC, “Mr. President wanted a very clear picture regarding accountability and the exact amount of funds already recovered from some of those who were said to be making refunds to the coffers of the Federal Government of Nigeria”.
It was learnt that Buhari’s express orders to the EFCC boss was to the effect that the funds already recovered must be accounted for.
Whereas this was not an indictment on the current leadership of the EFCC, Sunday Vanguard gathered that some of the issues that were already subjects of controversy even before Magu took over as the Commission’s boss needed to be sorted out.
Specifically, the activities of the EFCC regarding recovery of looted funds under Ibrahim Lamorde, the immediate past EFCC boss, were brought into sharp focus.
Buhari has vowed that all stolen funds would be recovered.
