Budget of Corruption!

With respect to the government of Mohamadu Buhari, it appears the time has finally come for Nigerians to end the prolonged honeymoon and draw a line in the sand. There can be no better call to arms or rallying issue than the nauseating and shameful ongoing revelations of padding, fraud and deliberate misallocation of scarce resources in the 2016 federal budget. That a country as blessed as Nigeria will present a budget with dodgy and shoddy figures as are being revealed calls into question the competence of the people President Buhari is relying upon to handle the finances of his government. Nigeria parades a citizenry made up of professionals trained in some of the best academic institutions in the world and have been in charge of multi-billion dollar budgets in different capacities around the world. What Nigerians must bear in mind is that the 2016 budget is only $30Billion with the official rate and $20Billion with the black market rate. President Buhari must himself explain to Nigerians why after taking almost five months to appoint his ministers with the excuse that he was searching for the best hands, this disjointed, incoherent, elementary and pedestrian document called the 2016 federal budget is the best they can produce. In the absence of a cogent explanation from each and every minister and senior official associated with this budget, the president should ask for their resignation or fire them with immediate effect. Those guilty of willful conduct should be arrested immediately and prosecuted. Culled from Sahara Reporters

Workers attached to the Presidential Villa, Abuja have been warned to desist from leaking contents of official letters and files or risk serious sanctions. Kyari said a document signed by him found its way out of his office illegally recently and added that such development would no longer be tolerated. He said anybody linked to any leaked information would face the consequence. Culled:The Punch

Whistleblower Aluko Cries That His Life Is At Risk Over His Confession on Last Ekiti Guber Polls

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief who blew the whistle on the alleged rigging of the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State yesterday alleged that his life was under threat. Dr. Temitope Aluko, who on Sunday spoke of how former President Goodluck Jonathan allegedly gave Governor Ayo Fayose $37 million to prosecute the election and directed that the military should facilitate victory for the then PDP candidate, said he escaped from the hands of “fake security men” on Sunday night. He also indicted many politicians and military chiefs. But Fayose described him as desperate and denied the allegations. Also yesterday, All Progressives Congress (APC) urged the government to prosecute all the people indicted by the ex-PDP chief. A human rights lawyer, Morakinyo Ogele also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the $37m allegedly given to Fayose by Jonathan. Aluko said yesterday: “After the live television interview on Politics Today on Channels Television on Sunday at about 9.30 pm, my attention was drawn to the presence of some operatives supposedly from the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), seeking to effect my arrest. “However, having passed though the same route before, my instinct immediately told me that something was amiss. I made some calls and found out that there was no such order to effect my arrest by the office of the IGP or from any other security agency for that matter.I was later made to understand that the ‘fake’ security agents were actually miscreants posing as security men and acting on the orders of Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose to get rid of me at all cost.I must let Nigerians know that I have made a resolution to let the whole world know what transpired during the Ekiti 2014 governorship poll.” The Ekiti APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, called on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) to prosecute all those named in the Ekiti 2014 election rigging drama. The party said it had twice petitioned the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice on the matter, stressing that the revelations by PDP secretary had made it imperative that the nation’s chief law officer must act now. Olatunbosun said the election fraud crisis had refused to go despite all shenanigans by Fayose, who he said was the biggest beneficiary of the election fraud that created a blight on Nigeria’s international image. The APC spokesman said even though there was nothing new in the PDP Secretary’s revelations, he noted, however, that it had become pertinent to prosecute the suspects as the revelations were again emanating from the insider who participated fully in what is now known as Ekitigate. “By Aluko’s revelations, we are justified in our claim that our candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi, never lost that election, but was criminally toppled by a coup d’etat orchestrated by Fayose in cahoots with President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration that illegally deployed money and the military to ensure victory for Fayose. “It is interesting that more names are coming up in the biggest election scam ever witnessed in Nigeria with the alleged participation of Ifeanyi Ubah of the infamous Transformation Agenda for Nigeria (TAN), a shadowy campaign group for former President Jonathan in the fraud. No wonder Ubah was compensated with a honorary Fellow by Fayose at the Ekiti State College of Education for a job well done.” Ubah denied ever giving Fayose money for the election. Olatunbosun went on: “It is in the light of this that we are calling on the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to prosecute all the suspects in the election fraud for treasonable felony to preserve the integrity of the Nigerian Constitution.” The APC said President Muhammadu Buhari should use Ekiti election “fraud” case to convince Nigerians that official impunity and fraud would not have a place in Nigeria under his watch. “We have seen the Army already tackling the military aspect of the Army Probe Panel report. We expect the police and attorney general of the federation to also toe the line in coming out with the civilian component of the probe report and act accordingly. “The military men were mere agents used by Fayose to rig the election. Some of the officers implicated in Fayose’s crime had been recommended for various sanctions, including losing their jobs while others are to face prosecution by the EFCC and court martial, according to the military rules and administrative procedure. “These military men should not be made to suffer alone for the crime committed in conjunction with Fayose and his fellow conspirators in PDP who are still working free as if there is no law in this country,” he said. Olatunbosun berated Fayose’s media aides, Lanre Ogunsuyi and Lere Olayinka, for claiming that Captain Koli’s audio tape was a forgery, saying, however, that it was gratifying that Fayose, who also first denied his voice on the tape, later admitted that it was his. “If the Ekiti audio tape was a forgery as they alleged, were the appearances of Koli and Tope Aluko also forgeries?” he said. Noting that Fayose had always mouthed his readiness to wave his immunity to face prosecution over alleged crimes, he said now was the time to wave that immunity to face prosecution on the electoral fraud. He insisted that APC would not accept anything short of comprehensive review of the Ekiti State election saga, even as he urged Nigerians to prevail on the Minister of Justice to compel Fayose to explain to the world what he meant by saying that he collected INEC soft copies and got them printed as captured in Captain Sagir Koli’s tape detailing all activities connected with Ekiti poll rigging. “Besides Fayose talking on the tape about how INEC gave him soft copies that he printed to win the election, the minister of justice must also compel the governor, who spoke on election result collation in the tape, to tell Nigerians which election result he was collating in Efon-Alaye on June 19, 2014, two clear days before the June 21, 2014 governorship election,” Olatunbosun concluded. Ogele urged Fayose to resign from office within seven days “because the election that brought him to office was highly compromised”. He vowed to approach the Federal High Court if Fayose fails to resign to seek a declaration that the election is null and void by reason of the latest facts and figures released by Fayose’s former right-hand man. The activist-lawyer also challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to explain its own side of the story following the alleged sharing of N1 billion by its officials to compromise the Ekiti poll. “They have the statutory power to probe this fraud; they should look into it to ascertain whether it is part of the arms money diverted and shared among many people. If truly the Federal Government is determined to fight corruption, EFCC, as a matter of urgency, should comb Ekiti for this gigantic fraud.” culled:thenation

Incredible! An Italian town where a baby is born, first time in 28years!

Since the 1980s, the Italian town of Ostana had not seen the birth of a single baby. But last week, a dream came true, as the mayor of the small town said. A baby was born. The first in 28 years. According to La Stampa, the town has only 85 inhabitants, including newborn Pablo. Its population has continuously fallen -- a fate shared by many other Italian towns and villages. "The real decline started in 1975, with 17 babies between 1976 and 1987, when the last boy was born - until little Pablo," Mayor Giacomo Lombardo was quoted as saying. A party will be held to celebrate what he hopes will be the start of a reversal of that trend. But the population decline will be hard to stop, no matter what ideas Lombardo comes up with. Younger Italians in particular say there are few attractive job prospects in rural areas. Many have moved to cities, leaving their hometowns to the elderly. Ostana, which is in northern Italy, has only one shop, a bar and two restaurants, according to the Italian news site the Local. Some parts of northern Italy have been hit harder than others. But the south, including the island of Sicily, has faced more dramatic demographic changes in recent decades. The arrival of baby Pablo has certainly been welcomed in Ostana, according to the mayor. "It's great to finally have someone born here, and it shows that our efforts to reverse population decline are slowly working," Lombardo was quoted as saying. Lombardo has tried to create jobs in order to prevent other young people from leaving the town. Pablo might be the first indication that his strategy is working. His parents wanted to move away several years ago but stayed after they were offered the opportunity to work at a mountain refuge. Source: Washington Post

Guardiola's no coward: Why Man City gamble makes perfect sense

Some say the man who built the best team in history, a man with two Champions Leagues to his name, is still unproven, and that his move to City is the easy option - they are wrongThe suggestion that Pep Guardiola only takes the easy option, and that in choosing Manchester City he has done so once again, should be disregarded immediately as nonsense. It is simply not true, and for many reasons. First of all, he is supposed to have inherited a great Barcelona team that was apparently destined to be successful no matter who was in charge. He already had Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry, Carles Puyol and Samuel Eto'o, they say, and that selling Ronaldinho, still one of the world's best, to make Messi the main man was an obvious decision. That can only be put down to some kind of perverse revisionism. This was Guardiola's first job in senior management; had he not been anything other than an extraodinary coach and a great motivator, would these very players - talented, iconic and stubborn, as Pep's detractors acknowledge - have respected him and responded to his ideas? Ideas which were, are and continue to be, extremely demanding? He would not have lasted a season had he been the chancer that some are suggesting, much less gone on to mould what is probably the best football team in history, one that set tactical trends that countless top clubs now follow. BUSTED: CATALAN POLICE ENDS EIYE CONFRATERNITY, SEX-TRAFFICKING IN SPAIN

Catalan Police have busted a sex-trafficking group in Spain known as the Supreme Eiye Confraternity (SEC), or the Air Lords following a raid on their residential building. BBC’s Sam Piranty was given access by the Catalan police, Mossos D’Esquadra, to an investigation into a Nigerian sex-trafficking gang. He spoke to traffickers and women rescued from sexual slavery before filming an early morning raid in November, which led to 23 arrests. He also discovered that the gang is now using London as a gateway into Europe. It’s 08:00 in the Catalan Police Headquarters on the outskirts of Barcelona and Xavi Cortes, head of the anti-trafficking unit, waits patiently for his 22 teams to confirm they are in position. Finally, he gives the order. Two-hundred-and-fifty officers quietly climb out of their police vans. Single file, each team approaches a residential building watched by a few surprised neighbours. On reaching the door, one of the masked police officers uses his fingers to count down. Three, two, one. The door is knocked down, the silence shattered, the officers rush inside. The raid results in the arrest of the leaders of a Nigerian-based group running an international sex-trafficking ring in Barcelona. It’s known as the Supreme Eiye Confraternity (SEC), or the Air Lords, and 23 people are now behind bars, with European Arrest Warrants issued for those who have left the country. This operation was 18 months in the planning and involved monitoring more than a million phone calls, tapping dozens of mobile phones and months of surveillance.
”You know, one of the tappings showed us that last year, on 7 July, around 400 members of SEC met in Geneva. They had a big meeting, all together.” Xavi Cortes, Catalan police says Eiye Confraternity uses forged documents and passports from Nigeria to fly into places like Gatwick – these need co-operation of people working in the government It was an audacious display of arrogance. In a city where many of the world’s global institutions are headquartered, including numerous UN agencies, a global criminal institution held its own parallel international gathering and no-one tried to stop it. Benin City, Nigeria, is a human-trafficking hub, and a good place to observe how the criminal operation works. After long negotiations, our team manages to speak to a recruiter, whose job it is to find girls. The recruiter explains that they either approach girls directly or through their families offering fake jobs abroad in a supermarket, or as a cleaner. However, not everyone is tricked. Many women approach the recruiters themselves, often in full knowledge that they will be working as a prostitute in Europe. Some parents, also aware of this, approach recruiters on behalf of their children. Source:BBC

NFF Officials engage in a brawl....

The meeting called yesterday by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr. Solomon Dalung had all the trappings of reopening the already settled leadership crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). It took a dangerous turn when the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick and Chris Giwa who is laying claim to the same office almost engaged each other in fisticuffs. Pinnick and his greatest challenger, Giwa were locked in a battle for the soul of the NFF after the election in Warri, Delta State on September 30, 2014 which produced the present board. The Confederation of African Football and FIFA have both recognised the Amaju Pinnick-led board. Giwa lost his case both in Fifa and the Court of Arbitration for Sports, CAS. And this was after he had withdrawn his case from a Jos court when Fifa moved to ban Nigeria. For more than one year peace reigned in Nigerian football and the meeting the minister called was generally condemned by football stakeholders who said the action was tantamount to waking up a dead horse which could trigger off another bad blood. Giwa was laying claim to the NFF top seat, saying he was duly elected after the August 26, 2014 controversial election in Abuja in which delegates massively boycotted. Dalung, a known friend of Giwa back home from Plateau State who just assumed office late last year seemingly reopened the case and initiated an unnecessary peace move that turned out an anti-climax. between the two warring factions. During the meeting, tempers rose, resulting in altercations from both men who called each other unprintable names. But for the intervention of Dalung who sat in between the two angry men, the situation would have resulted in the two men using their fists as they wanted. However, after the fracas which lasted for about five minutes, the meeting continued. After long hours of deliberation, the meeting was deadlocked. The Minister told reporters that the meeting will reconvene next week Wednesday. He asked both parties to maintain the peace and that he will try to resolve the problem in the interest of football and the country. According to him, the meeting has given him the opportunity to hear from both parties. On what FIFA would do if the crisis persists, Dalung said he knows that the world body rules over the game adding that they will also be interested to see that the right thing was done. “I have the will power and the political power to resolve the issue and I am optimistic that this issue will be resolved. We have decided to hear from them because this is a democracy, if we were in a military dictatorship I may have just decreed and asked one party to step down.” culled from Vanguard.

2016 Volkswagen Beetle Dune Drive

Volkswagen wants all of us to remember the good ol’ days. You know, any time prior to September 2015, when the EPA dropped its NOx-hammer on the company’s dirty-breathing diesels . If you can’t bring yourself to forgive and forget so readily, VW is happy to guide you further down memory lane to the 1960s, when the pollution was hazier and the love flowed freely. After the Microbus-inspired BUDD-e concept —an all-electric mea culpa—VW appears eager to tap the nostalgia ATM again with this new Beetle Dune . The Beetle Dune, a midrange trim level in special-edition guise, is meant to evoke Baja Bugs. Those modified Type 1 Beetles, created in the image of the Meyers Manx, could be anything from a recreational dune buggy to a bona fide desert racer. While there wasn’t a single blueprint, a Baja Bug was instantly recognizable by the trimmed-back bodywork and swollen tires. Culled from caranddriver

Court denies FG power to seize MTN's funds in Nigerian banks

Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos has denied the Federal Government powers to seize all funds owned by MTN Nigeria Communications Limited in Nigerian banks, pending when the telecommunication company pays up the N1.4 trillion fine leveled against it by the NCC over its failure to deactivate unregistered sim cards. The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), through his counsel, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), had in a motion filed before the court, expressed fears of MTN moving all its funds in Nigeria, since it was in their habit to do so. According to the court paper, MTN had between October 2007 and May 2009 moved over $7.7bn of the money made in Nigeria to a foreign account. The telecommunications company had also on February 8, 2008, moved over $936m out of Nigerian banks to their foreign accounts. “Unless this honourable court urgently entertains this application, the plaintiff/respondent would move its funds out of Nigeria, being the jurisdiction of this honourable court, and thereby frustrate the enforcement of the fine in the likely event that this honourable court sanctions the imposition of the fine,” counsel to the AGF said. However in his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice denied the Federal governments application, stating that it had not provided any evidence showing that MTN was indeed moving its funds out of Nigerian banks. He said hearing on the case filed against the Federal government challenging the N1.4 trillion fine is more important and of public interest and will need to be heard soon so judgement can be delivered. He adjourned the case to January 22nd. Source:LIB

Android N, Google "driverless" cars & more in Google's Annual Developers's Meeting.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has just revealed that the 10th annual Google I/O developer conference will be held between May 18 and 20, 2016, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. For those who don't know, the venue is a little special this time, as it's located in the company's hometown, which Pichai describes the location as the "neighborhood where it all started" via Twitter. He also made the announcement on Google+, giving away more specifics there. I/O'16 coming to neighborhood where it all started 10 yrs ago: Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, May 18-20. More details soon. #io16 — sundarpichai Fol darpichai) January 12, 2016 "We'll have 3 full days together to dive deep into developer content, code labs, and more. If you can't make it in person, you can still join us via I/O Live and through an I/O Extended event in your local community. Stay tuned to #io16 and +GoogleDevelopers in the coming weeks for more details," he says . What To Expect Android N In last year's conference, Google introduced Android M, and it eventually became the highly anticipated Marshmallow. This time around, the company could officially take the wraps off Android N, which is already well under way with hints of Split Screen and Multiwindow support, according to the team behind Pixel C. Other expected features include pressure sensitivity, a battery management tool and the Dark Theme, which was scrapped right before Android 6.0 Marshmallow. As for the name of the major Android update, Pichai says that it could be determined through an online poll , suggesting that Android 7.0 could take after an Indian dessert such as "neyyappam" or "nankhatai." Project Tango At CES 2016, Google and Lenovo announced the first Project Tango smartphone , a device that can take the dimensions of a room and generate on-screen 3D objects. It's likely that the Mountain View company will dish out more details at the event. Google Cars Google is renowned for driverless cars, which have been proven to be impressively safe even in terrible weather . However, one of the company's self-driving automobiles was involved in an accident back in July 2015 for the first time. With that said, Google could unveil new safety measures along with a new lineup of vehicles that are compatible with the system. On top of those, the company could announce third-party applications such as Waze to be integrated with Android Auto. Android Wear Updates for the smartwatch OS could be featured, including improved performance of gestures and voice controls. A couple of new devices would be nice to see too. Considering that Android Wear became compatible with iOS in 2015, there's a slim chance that Google will announce compatibility with Windows phones as well. Chrome OS There has been buzz about Chrome OS merging with Android , and if it's going to be announced at the conference, then it's arguably going to be the biggest news there. However, Google developers say that it's not true. At any rate, the integration between the two has been shaping up into a tightly knitted system, so if the unification really turns out to be false, then more features and updates for the pair's communication could be disclosed instead. Nexus 7 The first Nexus 7 was a big hit, and the second-generation model was too. The most recent rumors surrounding the hot tablet suggest that the third-generation will be manufactured by Huawei , which is reportedly slated for a May 2016 release with design cues from the Google Pixel C. If all goes well, Google could finally give an official word about the much-coveted slab. Project Ara Project Ara has been going on and off since 2013, and until now, there's still no solid release date. With such a long wait, a "humorous" piece of news about the modular phone breaking into pieces when dropped made rounds on the Internet. Of course, it has been put to a stop eventually. Moving forward, the team behind Project Ara assured fans that the device will roll out in 2016 somewhere in the United States. Where are we headed next? We are looking at a few locations in the U.S. #ProjectAra #newlocationcomingsoon — Project Ara (@ProjectAra) August 17, 2015Hopefully, Google will give out more specifics at the event. Google Glass Remember the awesome demo of Google Glass before? Well, Google could showcase a second-generation model of the wearable tech in the shape of a monocle . Just like all the other Google I/O developer conferences, this one is also expected to be a huge event. With fingers crossed, Google could finally get its projects off the ground this 2016.
